Managing Back Pain With The Right Office Furniture

An increasingly sedentary lifestyle and incorrect posture have contributed to an increase in spinal problems across the UAE. What makes matters worse, is that doctors estimate that around 10 to 20 percent of patients with back and neck pain are below the age of thirty. Some conditions are serious and can only be treated through surgery. But you can prevent the problem even before it occurs. Here's how you can manage back pain with the right office furniture:

Choose the right ergonomic chair:

The kind of work required to be done and the height of the individual can help to determine the desired height of an employee's workstation. While sitting, make sure that the upper arm is parallel to the spine, and the elbows are at a 90-degree angle. You should be able to slide your fingers under the thigh at the edge of the chair. The lower back should be pressed against the back of the chair while the lower back arches slightly.

Understand the difference between office chairs and computer chairs:

You cannot interchange one for the other! If your job involves sitting for long hours before the computer, look for computer chairs that are specifically designed to allow people sitting at the computer for extended periods of time.

Do not encourage staff to use broken chairs:

If the chair doesn't feel comfortable while leaning back, it's time to replace the chair. The back support is either malfunctioning or broken. Do not let staff sit on them and remember to replace broken chains.

Encourage staff to take breaks:

Sitting in the same position for long hours can be taxing. Encourage staff to get up out of their chair and walk around. You could also buy sit-stand work desks where employees have the option of switching between sitting and standing positions. In fact, some physicians recommend taking a five-minute break after every hour. It offers the spine enough time to recover.
